Liposuction

BEFORE & AFTER

Liposuction ELIMINATES the fat that impacts the contours of your body

Anyone who’s ever lost weight knows that even a few pounds can make a big difference. Liposuction, offered by The Breazeale Clinic in Knoxville, is not an overall weight loss procedure, but it does make a visual impact. The surgery is designed to eliminate fat that impacts the contours of your body—the fat that makes your stomach bulge or your arms appear loose and flabby.

What Can Liposuction Do?

Even people who maintain a healthy weight can find unpleasant pockets of fat on their body, from their abdomen to their legs to underneath their chin. Liposuction is a relatively quick and easy way to remove that fat, and can be applied to any combination of your:

  • thighs, hips, and buttocks

  • calves, ankles, and inside of the knee

  • belly and overall midsection

  • chest

  • upper and lower back

  • upper arms

  • neck and jowls

In many cases, a small amount of fat in a particular area or two is the only impediment to that sleek, slim look you’re hoping for. Once the fat is removed, your defined features and contours—from a flat belly to a distinct jaw line—will be visible.

Liposuction is also sometimes used as a breast reduction technique for women and men.

What Can You Expect From Liposuction?

Dr. Breazeale performs his procedures by first making a small incision and administering an anesthetic. Then, he inserts what’s known as a cannula—a technical name for a very thin tube—into the region to be worked on. He will move this cannula back and forth to loosen the fatty tissue, which is then removed via suction from an attached vacuum.

The steps can be repeated as necessary from several angles to remove the fat from a larger area, such as the buttocks and thighs, or may be duplicated across multiple smaller areas around your body, depending on the scope of the procedure. In each case, Dr. Breazeale knows that you don’t want to live with a series of visible scars, so he makes every effort to place the incisions in inconspicuous areas that will escape notice.

The duration of the procedure depends on its scope: A simple liposuction to eliminate jowls will not take as long as liposuction on your belly and chest. A good rule of thumb is to expect the treatment to last a couple to a few hours, but Dr. Breazeale will talk to you about the estimated time you will spend in surgery.

Note that liposuction is not designed to be a treatment for cellulite, which is a sort of irregular skin puckering that can plague anyone, but is commonly associated with fat. While liposuction removes underlying fatty deposits, it does not smooth out the overlying skin, so cellulite can remain. Keep this in mind when discussing your physical appearance goals and desired outcomes with Dr. Breazeale during your consultation.

Liposuction Recovery and More

Areas of the body impacted by liposuction typically swell after the procedure. This is a part of the healing process. As fluids drain and swelling goes down, you will see the results of your surgery. While physical activity will be limited in the days after your procedure, you will need to move around some, as this motion helps to get your blood pumping.

Results can be lifelong—if you maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. Since this procedure removes fat, the best way to preserve your new look is to prevent fat from accumulating again.

Some patients experience skin numbness after their liposuction procedure, this condition tends to go away on its own. Bruising is also a possibility. Any longer-lasting complications should be brought to Dr. Breazeale’s attention so he can ensure that the best care is delivered.
